Some highways reopen, others close in northern Alberta

Motorists are advised of the following updates regarding highways in northern Alberta:

  • Highway 2 is now open both east and west of Slave Lake.
  • Highway 88 remains closed four kilometres north of the junction with Highway 2 north of Slave Lake. A detour is available in the northeast corner of the Town of Slave Lake from 12th Avenue to Tamarack Road.
  • Klondyke Ferry remains shut down, which carries Highway 661 traffic across the Athabasca River east of Fort Assiniboine.
  • Highway 33 north of Swan Hills is now closed from the junction with Highway 32 to the junction with Highway 2.

Lanes reduced on Manning Drive detour in Edmonton

Motorists are advised that lanes will be reduced on the Manning Drive detour north of 167 Avenue in Edmonton.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction starting July 11. The lane reduction accommodates tie-in construction and grading on the Manning Drive-Anthony Henday Drive interchange. The lane reduction will be in effect until Aug. 4, weather permitting.

Heavy rains, flooding close highways in northern Alberta

Motorists are advised that the following highways in northern Alberta are closed until further notice due to heavy rains and flooding:

  • Highway 2 closed at junction with Highway 88 east of Slave Lake. No detour is available.
  • Highway 88 closed four kilometres north of the junction with Highway 2 north of Slave Lake. A detour is available in the northeast corner of the Town of Slave Lake from 12th Avenue to Tamarack Road.
  • Highway 2 closed at the Mooney Creek bridge west of Slave Lake.
  • Klondyke Ferry is shut down, which carries Highway 661 traffic across the Athabasca River east of Fort Assiniboine.

No turns starts July 13 at Stony Plain Road and Anthony Henday Drive in Edmonton

Motorists are advised that there will be access closures to and from Stony Plain Road and Anthony Henday Drive starting July 13 to accommodate construction of the Stony Plain Road interchange.

At that time, traffic will only be able to travel north and south on Anthony Henday Drive, and east and west on Stony Plain Road. All turns at the intersection will be closed.

127 Street in Edmonton temporarily closed from 167 Avenue to Anthony Henday Drive right-of-way

Motorists are advised that 127 Street will be closed from 167 Avenue to the north side of the Anthony Henday Drive right-of-way, from July 1 to July 17, 2011.

The road will be temporarily closed for road tie-in work and freeway construction.

Minor delays on Peace Region highways for surface treatment repairs

Motorists are advised that from June through to the end of September 2011 the following Peace Region highways will undergo crack repair and chip seal coating:

Highway 2;
Highway 33;
Highway 35;
Highway 40;
Highway 43; and
Highway 743.

Delays on Highway 2 over Bad Heart River due to bridge construction

Motorists are advised that commencing July 4 there will be bridge construction on Highway 2 over the Bad Heart River.

A two lane temporary detour has been built on site to accommodate motorists. Speed limits will be reduced from 100 km/hour to 50 km/hour. Construction will run from July through to September, weather permitting.

Highway 734 reopens to motorists with some lane restrictions

Motorists are advised that Highway 734, between Highway 11 and Highway 752, will be reopened to motorists early on June 30, 2011.

While the highway will be reopened, motorists are further advised that some sections near the North Ram River and Otter Creek are restricted to one lane for repairs. These repairs will be commencing throughout the summer. Further notice will be provided when all repairs are complete.

Flooding restricts junction of Highway 719 to one lane

Motorists are advised that due to recent flood damage, Highway 49 from the BC border to the junction of Highway 719, near Bonanza, will be restricted to one lane traffic.

Traffic will be restricted for approximately 200 metres at each location.

Uniform rules will improve efficiency for trucking industry

Regulations are being streamlined for large commercial vehicles travelling across the boundaries of the three westernmost provinces.

Under the New West Partnership Trade Agreement, the governments of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan agreed to have consistent regulations and policies governing the operation of large transport trucks, without compromising safety.  Uniform rules about the size and weights of vehicles and other aspects of trucking operations will come into effect July 1, allowing trucks to operate more efficiently between provinces.
