Major sections of the Edmonton ring road will open to traffic this fall along with other highway improvements in the Edmonton area during the 2011 construction season.
“I have said many times, as part of our economic recovery strategy, that continuing to build and make strategic investments in our provincial highway network is the right thing to do,” said Luke Ouellette, Minister of Transportation. “Alberta is making the strategic infrastructure investments now that will support the capital region and this province’s growth into the future.”
Highway projects are ready to begin in southern Alberta for the 2011 construction season.
“This is about making the right investments at the right time,” said Luke Ouellette, Minister of Transportation. “We will continue to build and take advantage of lower overall construction costs because when we keep building, we keep Albertans working, support our communities and lay the foundation for future economic growth.”

The Alberta government is moving forward on major highway construction projects across northern Alberta.
”Investing in our provincial highway network supports thousands of jobs today, lays the foundation for future economic growth, and supports our communities,” said Luke Ouellette, Minister of Transportation. “These investments are critical. We must keep building now to take advantage of lower overall construction costs, keep the economy moving, and support the safe and efficient movement of people and goods.”

Using a seat belt is a simple and effective safety measure, and one important way to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities occurring on Alberta’s roads. Albertans are encouraged to share this message with friends and family as part of occupant restraint month.

Seat belts save about 1,000 lives per year in Canada. Wearing a seat belt also reduces the likelihood of sustaining an injury and decreases the severity of an injury. Collision-involved restraint users had a much lower injury rate (seven per cent) than those not using restraints (31.7 per cent).
Motorists are advised that Highway 33 south of Swan Hill has been temporarily reduced to one lane following a collision over the Athabasca River near Fort Assiniboine. The alternating single lane of traffic and a lane width restriction of 3.7 metres will remain in effect until bridge repairs can be completed. Work is anticipated to be completed by April 9, weather permitting.
Motorists are asked to use caution in the area and obey all signs and flag people.
Transportation Minister Luke Ouellette will represent Alberta and give a keynote address at the 2011 Western Canada Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association Convention in Laguna Beach, California, March 20-23.
“Roads play a crucial role in Alberta’s success and Albertans’ quality of life, and I am so pleased to be able to attend this conference and tell Alberta’s story about how we are building for the future,” said Ouellette. “Alberta’s Roadbuilders are a key stakeholder group and we value the important working relationship this government has with them. This convention also provides the opportunity to share Alberta’s successes and discuss best practices with our colleagues from Western Canada and California.”
