Council approves phase 1 of Green Line LRT

Calgary City Council has voted in favour of building phase 1 of the Green Line light rail transit (LRT) system.

According to a report from CBC News, council approved the current version of the route by a vote of 12-3. The $4.5-billion transit system is designed to run from 16th Avenue North to 126 Ave. S.E., with an underground tunnel running through the downtown portion of the route.

The City of Calgary and the federal government have both committed one-third of the project funding, approximately $1.5 billion each, with a provincial commitment yet to be secured. The provincial government had earlier stated that they want to see an approved route before committing funds to the project.

The current schedule calls for construction to begin in 2020, with the project completed in 2026.
