Judge denies Edmonton LRT injunction

Queen’s Bench Associate Chief Justice John Rooke has denied a request to halt the construction of the Edmonton LRT in order to save a pedestrian footbridge.

According to an article from the CBC, the group Save Edmonton’s Downtown Footbridge Community had asked for the injunction to save a footbridge between Cloverdale and Riverdale.

The judge stated that, while the footbridge and some adjacent parkland would be lost, the new bridge constructed as part of the LRT project would result in greater access to the river valley.

Had the injunction held up, the resulting work stoppage and changes to the LRT route could have resulted in millions of dollars added to the project’s bottom line.
