Ottawa approves Stage 2 LRT project

Councillors at the City of Ottawa have approved plans for the Stage 2 LRT project, the largest infrastructure project in the city’s history.

According to a CBC News report, city officials approved the plan that will see the LRT system extended in three directions, with a substantial completion date expected for 2023.

The city hopes to issue the RFP this spring, but that date could change, as officials wait for financial support to be announced by the federal government. Both the city and province have committed one-third of the original $3 billion project cost, but the federal government has yet to confirm its contribution.

In addition to approval of the project, council provided Mayor Jim Watson with a mandate to begin formal talks with the City of Gatineau over the prospect of converting an old rail bridge connecting the two cities into light rail.
