The Government of Canada has approved the environmental assessment for the $2.1 billion Ottawa light rail transit project, 14 on the 2012 Top 100 Projects report. The federal approval comes two years after the provincial government approved its environmental assessment of the project.
Three consortia are currently bidding on the projects and their final bids for the project are due in September of this year. The goal for the project planners is to have the project under construction in early 2013. The 12.5 kilometre long light rail line has been a hot topic in Ottawa, with many citizens and businesses voicing concern over the planned route of the project.
