A preferred proponent has been selected to begin negotiations with the provincial government and the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) related to the redevelopment of BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre: Affinity Partnerships. This follows an extensive evaluation of proponent teams that were shortlisted and invited to submit proposals to design, build, finance, and provide facilities management services to the new Acute Care Centre.
Members of Affinity Partnerships include:
- Consortium lead: Balfour Beatty Investments(www.bbcap.ca)
- Design: Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects (ZGF) LLP (www.zgf.com) and CEI Architecture (www.ceiarchitecture.com)
- Construction: Balfour Beatty Construction (www.
balfourbeattyus.com) and Ledcor Group (www.ledcor.com)
- Services: Balfour Beatty Communities (www.
balfourbeattycommunities.com) and Black and McDonald Ltd. (www.blackandmcdonald.com)
The next stage in the competitive selection process is to negotiate with Affinity Partnerships to settle the final terms of the contract, a process that is expected to culminate in a performance-based contract by the spring of 2014. Details about the contract and fixed project cost will be made public after the agreement has been finalized.
Construction of the new Acute Care Centre is anticipated to get underway in the winter of 2014/15. The Acute Care Centre will include inpatient units, an emergency department, medical imaging and procedural suites, a hematology/oncology department, and pediatric intensive care for BC Children’s Hospital. It will also include high-risk labour and delivery suite and a new neonatal intensive care unit for BC Women’s Hospital & Health Care Centre. The new design will emphasize the single occupant patient rooms, noise reduction features, access to natural light and views of nature, resulting in an improved healing environment.
The total cost of the redevelopment project is estimated at $680 million.
