Following on the heels of the Eastern Commuter Train Line, Montreal’s AMT regional commuter authority is preparing studies for upgrades to the Western Commuter Train Line (Train de l’Ouest). Currently, the line is limited to rush hour service due to conflicts with road traffic and sharing track with freight trains. The proposed project would add additional passenger-dedicated tracks adjacent to the existing tracks, with Lucien L’Allier Station as the downtown terminus. This would allow an increase from 144 to 456 trains per week, and an anticipated growth in line ridership from 3.6 million to 9.15 million.

The project underwent engineering studies in 2012, and discussions between transportation organizations in the West Island are currently ongoing. An RFP for technical advisors for both Finch and Sheppard projects were to be issued in late 2013 to facilitate the procurement and design work. At this stage, no exact budget or timeframe has been put in place.
