In response to the growing demand for Canadian potash exports, Canpotex is proposing to build a potash port terminal on Ridley Island, near Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The facility will be able to accept shipping up to 180,000 dead weight tonnes, increasing the total potash export capacity up to 13 million tonnes annually. The terminal is planned to be accessible by rail, with an automated railcar unloading and a conveyer system.

The project has been in a state of limbo since 2009, when Canpotex executives first came to meet with Prince Rupert residents. The company received environmental approval in November 2012, but final permits are still pending from Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Transport Canada. Commercial agreements must also be finalized before the company can proceed.
