This 11 km stretch will connect Highway 401 to the Detroit River International Crossing, and ultimately to the U.S. interstate system, while separating local and international traffic and eliminating stop-and-go traffic on the way to the border. The project has generated a number of local controversies, relating to the lower-than-expected number of jobs created, traffic noise, expropriation of properties, and treatment of neighbourhoods surrounding the parkway.
Construction began in 2011. Since that time, all but one structure has either been completed or begun construction. Several permanent features of the parkway were opened in 2012 and 2013. According to the contract, the parkway is anticipated to be open to traffic in fall 2014.
