Canada’s top 100 infrastructure projects breach $199 billion

The top 100 public sector infrastructure projects under development in Canada have broken the $199 billion barrier, according to the annual report released by ReNew Canada magazine.

The Top100 Projects report has been produced each year since 2006 by ReNew Canada, Canada’s only magazine exclusively reporting on the infrastructure industry. The team researches and analyses several hundred projects each year at differing stages of discussion, design, and construction to build its comprehensive list of public sector projects from all provinces and territories. The detailed report provides exclusive information on each project’s cost, owners, key players and contractors, construction status, site updates, financial arrangements, and date of substantial completion.

This year’s figure represents an increase of over $12.6 billion over the 2017 edition of the report, led by new projects in the water/wastewater, transit, and health care sectors. The Bruce Power and Darlington nuclear refurbishment projects in Ontario, valued at $13 billion and $12.8 billion respectively, hold down the top two spots in the report for the second straight year. The Muskrat Falls project in Newfoundland and Labrador holds the third spot for the second consecutive year, with a cost of $12.7 billion.

The energy sector represented the largest overall capital investment for projects that made the Top100 list, with 25 projects valued at $87.2 billion. The transit sector was second with 23 projects valued at $46.3 billion, with the transportation sector’s 18 projects valued at $32.7 billion being the third largest investment area. Ontario had the largest share of the projects and investment with 39 projects valued at $79.5 billion, followed by Quebec with 18 and British Columbia with 13. Alberta has $20 billion invested in 11 of the Top100 projects in Canada.

The 2018 Top100 Projects list will be celebrated at the annual Key Players and Owners Dinner on Tuesday, February 20th at The Carlu in Toronto. The gala event attracts executives from throughout the infrastructure industry in Canada as well as senior leaders from all orders of government.
